Premiership Rugby stalwart and 16 cap international winger/centre Matt Banahan has announced that he will hang up his boots at the end of the season. The big ball carrying roadblock has enjoyed an illustrious career, proving a consistent performer at both Bath and Gloucester.
To us, Matt Banahan has been an underrated asset to a league that has never really seen this type of player before. A utility back with a great hoof, eye for contact and great positioning, it's so rare to see a 6ft 7 back offer so much more than just being a battering ram; his match intelligence rivals his bulk and perhaps surpasses it.
Our favourite moments watching the 'big banana man' in action, were largely part of an exciting backline that saw Ford, Eastmond, Joseph, Rokoduguni and Matt himself tear up the league and bring Bath back into Top 4 Rugby. Banahan was the most consistent player for that crop and he still continues to bag over 5 tries a season with Gloucester today. A real Premiership legend!
