It's been a turbulent year for Rugby on and off the pitch. With all the disruption and chaos happening in the league structure, we've barely had time to speculate on next years Lions tour. However, as we creep closer to the end of the year, we are slowly seeing that hype build once again.
Itoje was a standout performer for England in the most recent world cup and rumours of captaincy have circulated ever since he hit the international stage. With Farrell seemingly favoured by Eddie Jones for England, that leaves Gatland with a tough decision on whether Itoje's first international captaincy should be for the Lions in 2021 or whether he should go to previous stalwarts within the side.
However, two pretty significant ex-Lions skippers have had their say this week, citing Itoje as the favourite to lead them out in SA.
"Every game I see him play, he's up for man of the match, I spent two months with him on tour three years ago. I remember looking at him in training and thinking, 'that guy can be captain on the next tour'." said two-time Lions captain Sam Warburton.
Paul O'Connell also was quick to comment, seeming to suggest that going with a forward is the logical move, "It probably hints towards Itoje. That's where the Lions have gone in the last few tours and it has been successful. Certainly in 1997 it was a success with Martin Johnson. He was young, abrasive, competitive."
Who would be your captain for the upcoming Lions tour? There are a couple that spring to mind for us... AWJ, Farrell, Launchbury even, but it's hard to look past what Itoje has to offer...
